Hi,
I am having a problem with FileMaker Pro 9 in MacBook Pro (Lion). I got an
error message "
FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files"
when I started my databases. I have tried all the solutions I could find on
the internet, but the problem still not resolved. Any help from you will be
very much appreciated.

Below are what I have tried.
1. Uninstall and reinstall. (no luck)
2. Set IPv6 in Network advance setting to "Linked-local onlly". (no luck, it
is not possible to turn it off).
3. No other copy of FM pro 9 is running on this computer
4. No FM Pro 9 server is running on the network
5. un-plug network cable (still have the error message)

What else can I do to get rid of this problem? Thanks a lot in advance.

Chi,

This is usually caused by another instance of FileMaker running on the
box. It can also be caused by an instance of FMP Server running. If
you've installed server on the machine, and it's set to load on
startup, you'll get this message, but you won't "see" the server
running as an app, because it loads as a service. This can happen if
the server was installed on another user account - it can end up
running "invisibly."

If that doesn't work, I suppose you could look for some service that
is set to FMP's port (5003), but this is pretty unlikely.

I encountered this problem repeatedly on my PC a few years back when I
was running a remote access program called GoToMyPC. Finally I got rid
of GoToMyPC and the problem immediately vanished.

FWIW,

I am very sure there aren't another instance of FileMaker running on this
MacBook Pro. I used to have a FileMaker 6 installed in this machine, but
that doesn't run after the Lion upgrade. It is now sit in the "incompatible
software" folder. I never installed a FM Pro server on this macbook either.
So I really can't think of any possibility "another user is already sharing
files". Before I upgrade to Lion, the FileMaker Pro 6 ran fine. I never got
this problem before.

Your have a good point on "Some service using 5003 port". Kevin Frank
mentioned a remoteAccess program on PC causes this problem on his computer
before. However, if this is true, FileMaker 6 should have got the same
problem before. I believe the Filemaker 6 use the same 5003 port. Of course,
things might have changed after the Lion upgrade. Anything is possible.

Anyhow, I don't know how to check if there are services using the 5003 port.
Do you by any chance know a tool for Mac OS X Lion that can list services
and ports?

I have not even seen Lion yet, but I have read about it.

I would imagine from what I read that it might be easy to have more than one instance of a program running concurrently (what with multiple users all having their own 'Spaces' and each user also having multiple Spaces too). I would also think that Filemaker would be aware of an instance that is already running.

So are you sure you don't have more than one instance of Filemaker running in another Space (either your own or another user's, such as your administrator account)?

I am quite sure that there is only one instance running, because I have
reboot the computer and make sure no major applications are running except
the background, no virtual machines. I still have this error message.

A few more updates on what I tried to narrow down the problems.

1. I installed a copy of FMPro 9 on another MacBook Pro running Snow
Leopard. It runs great. Sharing fine.
2. I download a copy of the trial version of FMPro 11 and installed the
trial version of FMPro 11 on this MacBook Pro with Lion, FMPro 11 runs fine
without complaining and sharing is fine too. This indicates that no other
FMPro sessions are running, and no other services are using the 5003 port
either.

I think the cause of this problem is likely in Lion. Maybe it's time to
upgrade to FMPro 11, but this means we might need to upgrade our FMPro
server advance too. Could FMPro 11 clients work with FMPro 9 server
advanced?

I'm a bit confused about your setup, because you originally stated that "No FM Pro 9 server is running on the network". I assumed you were trying to open a local file using FMP9 (so no network situation involved) and in fact you confirmed this by unplugging the network cable...

But now you imply that you have a server... So do you get the same message on your problem MacBook Pro when trying to open a local file and the hosted file?

Anyway, to answer the above question, the file format is the same (.fp7) so you should have no problems opening databases hosted by FMPS9 using FMP11 clients.

FMP9 does seem a little old to be running on Lion. Usually, though, Filemaker products just keep on running through lots of OS and hardware upgrades...

On the FileMaker support web pages you can confrim that FMP 9, 10 are not compatible with Lion (10.7.x) and are not supported.

My recommendations are to upgrade to 11 and ensure you have version 11.0v4.

And yes, you can use FMP 11 clients against FMP 9 server. But I recoomend upgrading the server, too. FMS 11 is much better thatn FMS 9 in many ways.

Sorry for the confusion. We have a FM 9 server running in the lab, which just
finished the very lengthy upgrade process from FM 6 not too long ago. Yes,
we have been very slow. I thus really don't want to touch it. In the lab,
most other macs are running Snow Leopard with a FMPro 9 client. They are all
fine. I have a Macbook which needs to communicate with the FM9 server in the
lab. This Macbook was just upgraded to Lion weeks ago. This started the
nightmare. Since the upgrade, first FMPro 6 was disabled since it can no
long run in Lion. Yes, we still have some FMPro 6 databases around. Second,
the FMPro 9 on this Macbook couldn't see the shared files from the FM9
server. The FMPro 9 could see the server, but can't see any shared files.
Firewall on this Macbook is OFF (allow all in-coming connections).

When I am out of the lab, I need to share data with a small groups, all with
FMPro 9. My FMPro 9 in Lion again doesn't share. So with FMPro 9 in Lion, in
my case, pretty much nothing works for sharing except that FMPro 9 could
still open local files.

I have been fighting with this problem for a week now. I have tried all the
suggestions I could find on internet. Nothing seems to help. I am testing my
Macbook now in a very simple environment, just two computers, a PC running a
FMPro 9 (no open database) from which I could test if sharing from my
Macbook is working. I am still hoping that I can do some twist to Lion to
get FMPro 9 to work. If I am out of luck, I will have to upgrade to FMPro 11
and hope that FMPro 11 works with FM9 server so that I can work in the lab
and work with other FMPro 9 in the small group.

Sorry for this lengthy reply. I think as long as I can get the FMPro 9
sharing on my Macbook to work, not only could it work with the small group,
it should be able to see the server in the lab too. There must be something
in Lion that causes this problem. I am scratching my head to find out. I
don't think downgrade my Macbook back to Snow Leopard is an option. We will
need to move forward one day eventually.

This helps clarify things a lot. If I might summarize...

1) You're trying to run FMP 9 on OS X 10.7
2) You have an FMS 9 installation somewhere else (presumably on OS X 10.6)
3) FMP 9 is able to run mostly; you encounter an error when trying to share files
4) FMP 9 is not able to open shared files from FMS 9
5) FMP 11 does not encounter an error when trying to share files on OS X 10.7
6) FMI has stated that FMP 9 is not compatible with OS X 10.7 and no fixes are forthcoming

Okay...

So the easy answer is upgrade to FMP 11 on the Macbook, since downgrading your Macbook to OS X 10.6 isn't an option. FMP 11 will work with files hosted on FMS 9 and is compatible with OS X 10.7.

I guess I have two options left.

1. Get FMPro 9 to work in Lion, and save a few hundred bucks.
2. Upgrade to FMPro 11 on this Mac and leave other Macs on Snow Leopard at
this moment.

I am glad FMPro 11 works with FM9 server. Otherwise, this would be many
thousands, together with many more FMPro 11 licenses for other machines.

It is hard to believe that FM can't come up with a fix. Must be a
miss-communication between a network protocol in Lion which confuses the
FMPro 9.

I am a little tired of this Lion upgrade. First, it doesn't work with our
file server since it disable the old AFP protocol. Then FMP 6 doesn't work
and FMP 9 doesn't share......

Thank you guys for your attentions and your suggestions. I feel so warm in
this mailing list. People are nice and professional here. I look forward to
more communications with you in the future. By the way, if you by any chance
know a trick that could get FMP 9 to share in Lion, please do shoot me a
note.

I can't really help with the filemaker issue. (Though I'm using Lion (10.7.2) with FMP9 (9.0v3) and successfully connecting to (a remote) FMS9, I never had trouble with it, so I don't know what your issue could be.)

That said your AFP problems are pretty easily solved: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700

That reminds me, there were two problems with FMP 9/FMS 9 unrelated to the OS X 10.7 upgrade. The first is a security certificate issue, the second a Bonjour (née Rendezvous) issue. See the following links:

Really, 10.7.2 works? This is great news! I am using 10.7.1. I'll apply the

Brian, thanks for the help. Yes, AFP works now. I also upgraded to 10.7.2
which of course didn't resolve the problem. I knew it.

Mark Rubenstein pointed out something yesterday that may over-ride these
other issues; an odd quirk that VMware or the like may set a false flag on
its own. If the problem persists, try shutting that down to test.
I upgrade to 10.7.2. Reboot the macbook. Make sure VMware fusion and other
programs were completely off. Uninstall FMPro 9 and reinstall FMPro 9. Still
no luck. It still complained some one else is sharing. What I don't
understand is why FMPro 11 doesn't have this problem. They are now both on
my macbook, one works and the other doesn't. Since FMPro 9 works for Brian
on Lion, there is no reason why it doesn't work for mine.

Well, at least FMPro 11 works. The trial license give me a month to work out
this. If I still can't figure out after a month, I will just spend the money
and move to FMPro 11.
